Chapter Fifteen

As Cy finished up with the wiring, Vince mulled over what his son had just confessed to him. It wasn’t something Vince hadn’t considered, but he knew in his gut that the topic would come up. He knew how much Kate meant to Cy and wondered how long it would be before he gave in to his feelings for her and wanted to go after her and his mom.

For the moment, that seemed to be all that Cy wanted to say about the subject, and for the rest of the time in the garage, they mainly made small talk. Vince wanted to try and talk him out of it, but he didn’t want to risk getting into an argument. In spite of the circumstances, he was enjoying this time with his son and also didn’t want to ruin that over something that might or might not happen.

It would be a long time before it was safe or even possible to travel. For the time being, just going short distances was risky. If there were bad people here around Cloverdale, it was safe to assume there were worse people in other places. Vince shuddered as he thought about the possible conditions in and around some of the bigger cities. He imagined some of the scenes likely unfolding around the country and had to force himself to stop.

Vince liked to think that, for the most part, people were decent and good, but he couldn’t ignore or deny the reality of what was happening here in their little town. It only took a small group to wreak havoc.

While Cy finished up with the lights, Vince occupied himself by rummaging through some old parts he had lying around and found a simple rocker switch that he thought they could use. If they connected the ignition wires to the switch, they could start and stop the loader that way.

He took it up to Cy in the cab and helped him mount it. They had the wires connected in no time and were ready to test their work.

“Well, cross your fingers. Here goes nothing.” Cy flipped the switch. The diesel engine coughed and then roared to life. Cy pulled the knob that controlled the loader’s lights and nearly blinded them as the spotlights reflected off the garage wall in front of them.

“Whoa, that’s bright!” Cy pushed the knob back in and all was dark again, except for the ceiling light that seemed very dim now in comparison. Vince wasn’t sure if the ceiling light only seemed dim because the loader’s lights had just blasted them or if the power reserves were getting low. Either way, it was time to shut the breaker off to the solar panels; they had used enough electricity already.

Vince went back to the panel box and secured the breaker to the solar panels for the night. By the time he returned to the garage, Cy had pulled the loader out into the parking lot and was closing the large overhead garage door.
